N.Y. says probe links $52 million in death benefits to beneficiaries

A New York investigation into life insurers failing to match life insurance policies against master files of deaths has resulted in more than $52.6 million in payments to 7,934 beneficiaries.

In its first interim report on the matches, the New York Department of Financial Services said most of the 172 life insurers and fraternal societies licensed in the state are investigating matches, but some had not yet started to make payments.

IOM Essential Benefits Recommendations Draw Criticism

A letter sent to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius from more than 2,400 health care providers and advocates offered objections to the Institute of Medicine’s recommendations regarding what benefits must be covered in state health insurance marketplaces. Additionally, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, offered a warning regarding an Internal Revenue Service proposal on premium assistance in the health law’s insurance exchanges.

ABI : reassurance to motorists on winter tyres

Under an ABI commitment, ABI member insurers representing 90% of the motor insurance market confirm that they will not charge any additional premium if winter tyres are fitted, provided that the tyres meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the vehicle manufacturers specifications and are in a roadworthy condition.

Nick Starling, ABIs Director of General Insurance, said: Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres.
